The Sarasota Model Railroad Club was chartered in 1975 and is the direct descendent of the original Club of the same name formed in the late 50’s. In 2006 the club was granted a 501(c)(3) non-profit status by the Internal Revenue Service. In 2007, its legal name was changed to the Railroad Education and Learning Center of Florida, Inc to more closely identify with its educational mission. We have four operating permanent exhibits on display at our Museum. In addition to the permanent exhibits, we have 4 different traveling exhibits. One of our most popular travelling exhibits is C.O.M.E.T. (Come Operate My Electric Train!), our interactive exhibit for children. The kids (young and old) get to operate the trains on this layout and ask questions about the trains and railroading. On our staff we have a "Master Model Railroader" (MMR), an educational certification awarded by the National Model Railroad Association. Several other members and volunteer staff have partially completed the requirements to become an MMR. We present two annual Railroad Expositions at the Manatee Convention Center in Palmetto, FL. One is held in mid December and the in mid February. These events celebrate the rich history of Railroading in the United States and showcase the fascinating aspect of the hobby of model railroading. Our operating hours are Tuesday evenings and Thursday evenings between the hours of 6pm and 9pm. On the first Saturday of the month we operate one of our exhibits in a prototypical manner with scheduled trains. Operators are assigned duties identical to prototypical respopnsibilities, such as Engineer, Dispatcher, Yard Master, etc. performing necessary duities to deliver and pickup freight and passengers along the railroad line. These sessions offer a glimpse into how the railroads in the US operate. Visitors are welcome to observe these sessions only. Due to the intensity of the operations, conversation must be kept at a minimum. Questions are allowed at the end of the session. |
